Features - Students

051712_shawJunior, Penn State University
Intern with Center for Dairy Excellence
Based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Background
Q. In what area are you pursuing a degree?
I'm majoring in agribusiness management with an international agriculture minor.

Q. What is your dairy background?
I grew up helping at my grandparents’ farm, doing tasks such as feeding calves and milking. Though my immediate family does not have a farm of our own, we were (and still are) heavily involved in raising heifers as well as breeding and showing dairy cows.

Q. What previous internship positions have you held?
I served as an intern for Pennsylvania State Representative Jerry Stern, though I was also involved with helping the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Legislative Liaison. It was a great opportunity to discuss current issues in agriculture and get a feel for the political side of the industry.

Q. What activities or associations are you involved in?
In the Penn State Dairy Science Club, I've served as the social media chair and apparel chair, and I participate in the Nittany Lion Fall Classic selection committee each year. My other dairy activities include the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association, where I served as the 2011-2012 junior committee president, and dairy judging. I was a part of the 2008 National Champion Pennsylvania 4-H Judging Team and the 2011 Penn State Dairy Judging Team in Lousiville, Kentucky. I'm also involved in the Morrill Chapter of Alpha Zeta Fraternity, where I've served as chronicler and rush chairman.

Internship information
Q. What will your responsibilities be?
That’s the best part of this internship – the variety. My responsibilities range from organizing open houses, planning events, writing articles, collecting data and various other projects I am assigned.

Q. What do you hope to have learned by the end of your internship?
I was born with a passion for the dairy industry. So, through the summer I hope to gain new experiences and knowledge that, along with my passion, will allow me to better serve the dairy industry.

Q. What intrigues you most about the company or organization where you're interning?
It’s a well-run and organized group of people who are dedicated to making dairy a better and more profitable industry.

Q. What can you do to make a meaningful impact during your internship?
By getting involved in anything and everything the Center has to offer, I hope to help farmers reach their goals

Q. What do you think will be the most challenging aspect of your internship duties?
As any job goes, there is always a deadline. Learning to complete jobs fully and efficiently will be the biggest challenge.

Future plans
Q. What do you hope to do after graduation?
I hope to continue serving the dairy industry as an advocate. There are still many people out there who don’t know the great things that come from this industry, and I want to make sure our farmers get the thanks and support that they deserve.

Q. Why do you want to remain a part of the dairy industry?
It has been an amazing industry to grow up around, and I want nothing more than to continue giving back to it.  PD
