More than six months after acquiring Island Dairy and renaming it Big Island Dairy, Steve Whitesides says he is in the process of more than doubling the amount of milk cows to 2,000 at the 2,000-acre property about 30 miles outside of Hilo.

This will boost production at the largest commercial fluid milk dairy in the state to 15,000 gallons a day.

Whitesides, who owns Whitesides Dairy in Idaho, hopes to start construction by the first of the year on another facility that will accommodate its projected growth. He also will be hiring about 10 more people at his current operation, which employs 22 workers.

There is only one other commercial milk dairy in Hawaii – Clover Leaf Dairy on the northern tip of the Big Island.

At one time, Hawaii had about 40 dairies.  PD

  1. So sad that we do not have an ORGANIC dairy farm here in the Islands. My family will not purchase any GMO milk products from this Big Island Dairy. I will be informing everyone I come in contact with what their practices are and how they are hurting the aina and the people and their cows. Sad... Agreed that if you did your research you would find the demand for organic products would be worth your while. Are people only about money? What about doing what's pono and making your living? Please rethink your strategy and the reason you own a dairy farm. Think of the future.
  2. Dairy is good news for Hawaii. However, if you are not certified organic or you are feeding cows GMO corn ( or any grain, seeing as they are grazers) you will not only be loosing a great profit making business but you will not get the support of Hawaii consumers who are demanding GMO free products and , if truth be known, want to drive the likes of Monsanto et al off these islands. Please do your research sir or your venture is bound to meet with failure. Do whats right for the aina and you will be rewarded not only in money but in popularity. A local organic dairy would take over Hawaii...guaranteed!
  3. I will not be purchasing any dairy products from Island Dairy because of their use of and growing of ROUND UP READY CORN!!! -- for their cows!! When the cows eat it, we drink the milk and we end up with poison in our systems. I will also be spreading the word about this unethical use of the Hamakua land and poisoning of people so others will support dairies who DO NOT use GMO ROUND UP READY CORN!! A long term study just came out yesterday 9/19 about the disastrous results of consuming this stuff!!--TUMORS, CANCERS, KIDNEY & LIVER FAILURE, PREMATURE DEATH... not to mention your chemical spraying kills the land and poisons the community of people in O'okala who live downwind of your spray. Do you drink your own round up ready milk Mr. Steve?
