In the last few years, we have noticed gradual changes in our Hispanic workforce. These range from changes in technology to changes in the age and maturity patterns of new workers. As dairy owners and managers, it is important to be aware of these changes and make decisions that will help the dairy become a more effective and efficient operation.

Technology and communication
Today, it is very difficult to find a worker who does not own a cell phone, who does not know how to send text messages or does not know how to shoot pictures or video with his phone. It is also far more common to find workers with access to the Internet and e-mail.

When I’m at dairies conducting employee meetings, workers will sometimes bring up the topic of “money and motivation.”

The comments often go something like this: “I need some extra motivation to do a better job; I’d like a raise.”

It turns out that a lot of people believe that if they were paid more, they’d be more motivated to do a better job.
