When visiting different dairy operations, it is relatively easy to tell the difference between the operations that are doing well and those having a rough time. Large, medium-sized and small dairies that are successful all have several characteristics in common.

I believe the common denominator that stands out in the successful operations I visit is that they have all developed a solid workforce.

The dairy workforce will be neither effective nor efficient, though, if the personnel in charge of the different areas on the farm are not ideal, not trained, not qualified, not motivated or not fairly and appropriately evaluated.

Do you think it’s possible to work fast and still do a good job? Or do you think the only way you can do a good job is by working slowly?

When I lived in Chihuahua, I was always amazed at how fast the street food vendors could make some of the best burritos, tacos, and tortas I’ve ever had.

They didn’t need to make food slowly in order for it to taste great. And, of course since they’re serving food, they always kept their food carts very clean and organized.

If you have heard me speak about supervision, you know that one of my warnings is that great supervision is not about “just being nice.” Certainly great supervisors are perceived by their employees as being nice. The perception, however, comes from the fairness of the supervisor.
