My son Paul recently came home from a trip to Bulgaria. He has had a hard transition into American culture ever since he was a boy. He started his life on the streets of Varna, Bulgaria, where his gypsy ancestors spent their days.

When he was six, he was put in an orphanage and, over the next few years, was bounced in and out of three different orphanages. His social skills and developmental abilities were sadly neglected. He is now almost 21 and wants to get along with his roommates and co-workers.

I have had this conversation many times, but I think now he really wants to know. I think he is teachable now. Skills I take for granted in communication, he doesn’t quite grasp.

The Garden of Eden was a glorious place. The grass spread like a carpet under Adam and Eve’s feet. They never encountered a thorn or a weed. The fruit and nuts hung from trees in abundance. Adam and Eve only needed to reach up to have their needs met.

The animals were congenial and peaceful. The lion and the lamb had no problem cuddling under the same tree. Bears and bobcats never tangled and snakes and lizards were beautiful creatures.

Santa takes precedence on Christmas, and the Easter Bunny takes center stage on Easter.

I can’t help but wonder what Jesus is thinking. His two special days are spent with the world’s eyes gloating over things that “have no life.” He must have the same feeling He displayed when only one healed leper out of nine returned to give Him thanks.

This year, on March 12, my parents will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. They were married in 1942, just as World War II was rearing its monstrous head. Daddy was 19 and Mom was barely 15.

By today’s standards that is young, and the naysayers would wag their heads and moan, “It won’t last. Everything is stacked against them.”

My parents outlasted the Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and are making it through the War on Terror.

0212pd_tenney_1Not long ago, I wrote an article that was perceived as a political ploy and an attack on the Catholic church. I was horrified when I read the critic’s message and realized how I had been so totally misunderstood.

My intention with the article, “Big Endians vs. The Little Endians,” was to bring Christian people together under one label, not to point fingers at any one church, especially the Catholic church.
