Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy pilot project results in 28 percent dairy sales increase for retailers PDF Print E-mail

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy recently conducted a focused exploration of dairy merchandising that resulted in a 28.8 percent incremental increase in dairy sales for select retailers. Supermarket News wrote about the results.

The center's report, “Dairy Meal Solutions: Merchandising Works,” suggested that a permanent display of rotating meal ideas can encourage time-strapped customers to buy more items.

For 16 weeks, six retailers – Harris Teeter, Brookshire Grocery Co., Save-Mart, Weis Markets, Roche Bros. and Food City – offered refrigerated meal solution displays with recipes and ingredients.

Without any outside advertising, the retailers participating in the pilot projects saw an increase in both number of units sold and dollar sales.

The average incremental increase for units sold across the displays was 19.2 percent, including an increase of 28.8 percent for dairy items. For dollar sales, retailers saw a 20.5 percent average incremental increase across the displayed items, with a 29.8 percent increase for dairy products.  PD
