In the late hours of Wednesday, May 15, after spending all day in a markup session, the House Agriculture Committee approved a $940 billion farm bill in a 36-10 vote. Nearly 100 amendments were thrown out during the session, many relating to food stamps. The dairy program was the only signifant debate related to farm subsidies.

Dave Johnson, president of the membership organization GrassWorks, recently sent letters to every Wisconsin legislator, calling on them to restore $400,000 per year in funding for grazing specialists and networks. He urges graziers to ask their state senator and assembly representative to back legislation to place funding for the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) in the upcoming biennial budget.

Wisconsin State Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison) is proposing legislation that would require veterinarians to report cases of animal abuse to law enforcement or to a humane officer. Current state law only requires that veterinarians report abuse when an animal is suspected to have been involved in animal fighting.

Milk Street Dairy LLC, a dairy farm in Tylerville, New York, has completed construction of five new buildings and increased its production capabilities in part due to an investment from National Grid's New York economic development program. The $50,000 National Grid grant helps to defray the cost of extending 3-phase electric service to the dairy farm.

USDA and Innovation for U.S. Dairy agree to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent PDF Print E-mail

On April 24, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will seek to reduce the industry's greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020. The document extends a 2009 agreement to save energy and accelerate the adoption of innovative waste-to-energy projects and energy efficiency improvements on U.S. dairy farms.
