I often wonder what our children are losing in this everything-at-your-fingertips society. We watch the television, Internet and movies, where every aspect of the story is spelled out in surround-sound, airbrushed living color and amplified music.

In our modern world, we don’t have to think – just let information flow over us as we sit in a lackadaisical stupor. We go from day to day connecting with everything and everybody – but seldom making connections.

My Wage
“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”

There was time to make a quilt and time to embroider. There was time to visit with a friend and take a long walk in the forest.

Right after Christmas, the store windows fill up with hearts, cupids and flowers attracting lovers to remember their one-and-only. Valentines, chocolate candy and pajama-gram commercials fill the airways and the Internet. It is a free-for-all of expectations of what a lover is to do to prove never-ending affection.

A couple of months ago, I promised I would share more gifts you can give to your children – not from the perspective of changing the child so much as changing the parent. These are not textbook theories; they were gleaned in the furnace of mistakes and struggles for solutions.
