Developing and validating a standardized scoring system for bovine respiratory disease tops the priority list for a team of veterinarians and scientists at the University of California – Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Science.

The research team, with the assistance of dairy managers and staff, are knee-deep in a project that targets prevention, diagnosis and treatment of bovine respiratory disease in dairy calves.

Our goal, of course, is better milk quality. We already have quality bonuses, but shortly after the training, we also instituted a “Milker of the Month” award.

Lameness seems to be on the rise, and misdiagnosing a problem can often cause a lot of unnecessary grief and expense.

The leading cause of death for farmworkers between 1992 and 2009 was tractor overturns, accounting for more than 90 deaths annually. A roll bar or roll-over protective structure and seat belt usage could have prevented these deaths.

However, in 2006 only 59 percent of tractors used on farms in the U.S. were equipped with these devices. Other tractor-related fatalities involve falls, run-overs, crushes and PTO entanglement.
