[Podcast] 4 things dairies need to do to stay in business with Pauly Paul, Complete Management Consulting LLC

Progressive Dairy Published on 28 October 2020

In this Progressive Dairy Podcast, Editor Peggy Coffeen sits down with Pauly Paul, dairy management consultant and owner of Complete Management Consulting LLC., a hands-on dairy consulting company that specializes in assisting farms with improving their efficiency and income while decreasing operational expenses.

Pauly shares his expertise with us as a regular contributor to Progressive Dairy magazine. In this edition we will revisit an article he wrote, “4 things dairies need to do to stay in business.

In the time we have here today, we’re going to dig into these four key points and also talk about how the events of the past year have influenced them.

Q: You started out in the article referencing the three “tiers” you see in the dairy industry. Explain to our listeners those three tiers.

Q: When you talk about point #1: Swallow your pride, what you are really saying is ask for help?

Q: Your second thing dairies need to do to stay in business was to “tighten their belts.” Explain what that means, and why it’s even more important right now, as cash flows for many dairy producers are increasing?

Q: How do you advise looking at the additional income from government funds when making projections for 2021?

Q: “Ripping off the band-aids” was your third recommendation for dairies that want to remain in the top tier of producers and stay in this business. What are examples of some of the band-aids you often see on dairies?

Q: Your fourth and final suggestion was for dairies to “bring their A game” in order to keep a foothold in the future. What does that look like?

Q: Looking ahead into the coming year, what is the single most important piece of advice you give to our dairy farmers listening today?

Thank you, Pauly, for walking us through the four things dairies need to do to stay in business. But we won’t be all business on this podcast today. Before we wrap up, I’ve got a couple of questions to help our listeners get to know you.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Q: When you are not out there saving dairy farms, what do you do for fun?

Q: What’s one item on your bucket list?
