The accumulation of wet snow collapsed a section of a dairy barn February 27 in the Madison County town of Fenner, trapping 50 to 60 cattle inside.

An army of volunteer firefighters and folks from neighboring farms climbed onto the roof with shovels, pitching in to get the weight off the roof so they could assess the damage inside.

Some cattle have died in the collapse at the Stone Brothers Farm and Greenhouse, 3652 West Mile Strip Road, but the number wasn’t known, Smithfield Fire Chief Mark Bradbury said.

“We’re doing our best to get a hole opened up to get the surviving cattle,” Bradbury said.
