Louisiana's agriculture department says a vaccine developed by scientists at the LSU AgCenter is showing results in preventing a disease that costs U.S. cattle and dairy producers an estimated $300 million a year.

The disease is "anaplasmosis," which is spread by ticks and destroys red blood cells in cattle.

Today, Governor Tom Corbett announced George Greig of Linesville, as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Agriculture. Acting Secretary Greig, a former dairy farmer andcurrent crop farmer,owns and operates a650acre farm in partnership with his brother in Crawford County.



In an off-farm capacity, Acting Secretary Greig has served on the USDA Farm Service Agency PA State Committee,Crawford County Conservation District, Conneaut Township Supervisor and Great Lakes Regional Water Board. Healso currently serves as a State Board Member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.

Horizon announced it now works with nearly 600 certified organic family farmers nationwide to supply organic milk to consumers.

In addition to the 531 certified organic family farmers currently providing organic milk to Horizon, there are 61 additional farms under contract with the company that will begin supplying milk during the next several months after all transition steps have been met.
