My dairy’s history: Mary and I started our own dairy business (Badger Creek Farm) near Fort Morgan 25 years ago with 240 cows after being in partnership with Mary’s family.

We now milk 5,200 cows and have 75 excellent, hardworking employees who help us with every aspect of running the dairy.

If I wasn’t a dairyman, I would be ... a cattle rancher.

I have been a member of DFA since ... the beginning of DFA. We were WDCI (Western Dairymen Cooperative Inc.) members before the merger of the founding cooperatives.

A little-known fact about the organization is ... DFA strives very hard to work closely with other cooperatives and other dairy businesses with the goal of improving both members’ and other dairy farmers’ margins.

What DFA does best is ... supply some of the very best, most innovative milk processing companies with some of the best-quality milk in the country, as well as processing member milk into highly sought-after ingredients and consumer products.

An influential or interesting person I’ve met through the organization is ... the farmer members from all over the country. They are very diverse in their situations and approaches to their dairies, but all have a passion for their families, their farms and the industry.

I hope my dairy legacy is ... that I did it well – that I respected and honored the people, the cows and the land, and fed others the highest-quality, best-value food they could buy.

My advice to all dairymen/dairywomen is ... to tell your story, especially to our consumers. Our industry is not well understood by those not in it, and we will all be better off if their understanding of our industry comes from you. PD
