My dairy’s history: My grandparents, Edwin and Ina Ayers, first purchased the farm in 1947.

The farm, which started with 30 milking cows, has since expanded to its current herd of 620 lactating cows.

My dad and uncle are now partners on the dairy, Ayers Farms Inc. My mom, aunt, cousin and I also all work on the dairy. I primarily work with the youngstock.

If I wasn’t a dairy farmer, I would be ... a professional traveler and reader. I’d love to return to New Zealand and see other countries, and I could catch up on all those books I have wanted to get through while traveling.

I have been a member of DFA for ... 15 years.

A little-known fact about DFA is … that there are more than 800 people who serve in leadership roles, from delegates and resolutions committee members to area councils and the board of directors.

What DFA does best is ... help its members. What they do allows me to be a dairy farmer. When my milk leaves here, it goes where it needs to go. DFA handles the marketing and contracts, and I appreciate that. They also provide services and education, which enable me to better do my job.

An influential or interesting person I’ve met through my work is ... my family and the people with whom I work here at the farm. The dedication and passion each brings to our profession is inspiring.

From thinking outside the box to resolve challenges, creating opportunities, sharing the joy of a job well done or just carrying on in quiet dignity, they are my heroes.

I hope my dairy legacy is ... setting an example for other young women who want to be farmers. For the general public, I hope to educate them that there is more to agriculture than corn and cows. Ag, in some form, touches every aspect of our lives.

My advice to all dairy farmers is ... to be passionate and proud of what you do every day. PD
