Your agricultural background, in a nutshell: I have been the co-owner of Beaver Creek Farm for more than 35 years, working in the dairy business with my husband, Dave. I bought my first Holstein in fifth grade, and some of the animals in the herd yet today trace back to “Milly.”

If I were not a dairyman, I would be … a teacher. When our three sons were younger, I was a classroom volunteer, and I continue to work with the youth at our church.

I have been a member of the Midwest Dairy Association since … I have served on the board since 1998.

A little-known fact about this organization is … of the 10 ladies on the board, eight of them are from Minnesota.

My favorite representative of this organization is … Molly Pelzer, a dietitian on staff. She is still with the organization and is a great friend to me and so many in the industry.

What the organization does best is … working together and getting things done. This group does a good job at working with the grass-roots level to involve our farmers in all the states we represent.

I feel valued as a member when … I see the results of our work.

An influential or interesting person I have met through this organization is … Dr. David Satcher, Former United States Surgeon General.

He is influential or interesting because … he is a great spokesperson for the importance of dairy foods in the diets of healthy children and has great respect for America’s dairy farmers.

The dairy industry’s greatest opportunity is … that we produce a product that can be made into a variety of other products, all of which are vital to diets around the world. With the demand growing for an affordable, quality protein source, dairy fits that need very well.

I hope my dairy legacy is … that I am kind and honest.

My advice to all dairymen/dairywomen is … take pride in what you do as caretakers of God’s creation. Growing up, my dad would often say, “He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, (Psalms 50:10) and I’m glad He gave a few to me.”  PD
