Location: Richmond, Virginia

Agricultural background, in a nutshell: I grew up on a beef cattle and tobacco farm in Southside, Virginia.

I have been a member of AFIA since ... 1969.

I joined AFIA because ... it is important for feed businesses to consolidate their resources in order to make the industry more effective operationally and politically. [Moore is vice president of Southern States Cooperative, Inc.]

A large number of organizations acting as a team have much more impact than individual organizations acting alone.

It also allows us to better understand all sides of the industry. This creates better business models for everyone involved. It’s just good business.

One thing to know about the organization is ... how dedicated the people in AFIA are to doing the right thing for the industry and for society as a whole. Providing safe, efficient food sources is in everyone’s best interest.

What this organization does best is ... represent the feed industry on Capital Hill. Not just lobbying, but doing the right things for the industry and the consumer.

I feel valued as a member when ... I see AFIA effectively defend the industry from poorly crafted legislation. Much of our political process forgets about the people and sometimes is more concerned about wins and losses instead of the overall effects of the legislation.

The dairy industry’s greatest challenge is … adequately controlling the production of milk. It appears to be feast or famine for the dairyman.

We have the ability to ramp up and produce milk so quickly that the industry cannot maintain a profitable price structure for a substantial period of time. Also, food safety and animal treatment will continue to be important topics.

The dairy industry’s greatest opportunity is … world population growth. Someone needs to feed the world. Dairymen are an important piece of that puzzle. PD
